GF Machining Solutions introduced this week the first model in its new Cut F series of wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) systems. Coinciding with the product launch was the grand opening of GF’s Medical Center of Competence, designed to provide suppliers to the medical technology industry with application engineering support, part runoffs, and training.

The new Cut F 600 features ease of use and flexibility, said GF Machining, which has leveraged more than 100 years of EDM expertise into its design. Features include the Uniqua control, an Intelligent Spark Protection System (ISPS), iWire intelligent functions, and RFID Smart Wire system. Design enhancements include thermal stabilization, vibration control, and machine movement precision.

The Cut F 600’s intuitive Uniqua human-machine interface (HMI) delivers optimal functionality and ergonomics with a 19-in. vertical touchscreen, full keyboard, and mouse, said GF Machining. Uniqua supports legacy file types from various EDM manufacturers. Offline and at-the-machine programming, ISO-based functionality, object-oriented programming, and a powerful graphic tool with integrated CAM and compatibility with major CAD/CAM programs are also part of the package.

The iWire function automatically identifies and adapts wire speed to changing erosion height conditions during the wire EDM process. This capability eliminates wire breakage while reducing overall wire consumption per job, in some instances by as much as 29%, according to GF Machining. The iWire function works in tandem with the company’s ISPS, both of which are part of the Uniqua control.

iWire not only recognizes exactly where the sparks of a wire EDM are happening during the process, it can also measure and identify the position of each spark along the length of an EDM’s wire. Knowing the exact location of a spark allows iWire to automatically adapt the wire spool speed. This feature reduces wire breakage during unattended operation when machining parts with steps and other features that vary erosion height.

Also available with the Cut F Series machines is the RFID Smart wire spool technology. The system stores wire characteristics as well as traceability-related data.

For increased precision machine movement, vibration control, and overall process stability, the Cut F Series machines feature several enhanced design elements. For example, axis optical encoders are cooled using the work tank and dielectric fluid, and high-accuracy machine ballscrews improve both positioning accuracy and smoothness.

GF Machining Solutions is a division of Switzerland’s Georg Fischer Group, which maintains a presence in 50 locations and a workforce of more than 3,000 employees worldwide.
